1. Visa Types

Processing time

Embassy New Delhi: generally within 15 calendar days. Some files take longer. Not earlier than 6 months before travel.

Stay period

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period. That cap still applies on a multiple-entry C, including visas up to 5 years. Count entry and exit days. Leave by the “Until” date even if days remain.

Validity

As issued. Single, double, or multiple. Frequent travellers can ask for multiple-entry up to 5 years; stay is still 90/180.

About This Visa

Indian ordinary-passport holders need a Schengen C for a short visit. Usual staff path: check type and papers on https://vistoperitalia.esteri.it, then lodge at VFS Global or at the Embassy (VFS is not mandatory; VFS adds its own fee). The Visa Section of the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi decides — VFS staff cannot assess or decide. Do not use visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/ita — it does not load. At the Embassy, visa fee from 24 June 2014: demand draft only, in favour of “Italian Embassy”, payable at New Delhi. At VFS: cash, demand draft, or NEFT, plus the outsourcer fee. Buy refundable tickets and hotels — a C can be refused or late. Never use the Embassy emergency phone for visa. No status by phone.

Documents Required

Signed form. Passport: issued within 10 years, validity not over 10 years, 3 months after the stay, 2 blank pages. Italy accepts Indian ordinary, diplomatic, and service passports
Biometrics (10 fingerprints and photo) in person if VIS does not already have prints from the last 59 months. Under 12 exempt from fingerprints. National D fingerprints from 11 January 2025 — not this holiday C
Purpose of stay, transport, and hotels / invitation as vistoperitalia and the Embassy menu list for that C type. Carry copies of the same papers at the Schengen border — a sticker is not an automatic right of entry
Travel medical insurance for one- or two-entry C: min. EUR 30,000, whole Schengen, whole stay — emergency care, hospital, repatriation including death (common Schengen India sheet on the Embassy site)
Funds — MAE table (one person / two or more): 1–5 days fixed EUR 269.60 / 212.81; 6–10 days EUR 44.93 / 26.33 per person per day; 11–20 days fixed EUR 51.64 + 36.67 per day (two+: 25.82 + 22.21); over 20 days fixed EUR 206.58 + 27.89 per day. How to apply

https://vistoperitalia.esteri.it — type and papers. File inside 6 months of travel.
Book VFS (Delhi, Jalandhar, Chandigarh for this district) or lodge at the Embassy. VFS is optional. Do not use visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/ita — it does not load.
First-time prints in person. Later C: prints already in VIS for 59 months may skip a second appearance — still follow the slot rules.
Refusal: reasons in the letter. Appeal to TAR Lazio through a lawyer within 60 days; notify the Avvocatura dello Stato. Family-reunion D: ordinary Court of Rome immigration section, not TAR.

Who can apply

Indian ordinary-passport holders in the New Delhi district: Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh.
Kolkata CG: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, Sikkim, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar — and Nepal. Mumbai CG: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Lakshadweep. Bangalore CG: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Puducherry.
Living most of the year elsewhere (example on the Embassy page: a student in New York home for two weeks) must file where they reside — a long VFS wait in that country is not a reason to file in Delhi.
National D (study, work, family over 90 days): different path and fees (Embassy: D EUR 116; national study EUR 50). Convert to a permesso di soggiorno within 8 working days of first entry — not this holiday C.
