About This Visa

Indian ordinary-passport holders need a visa. They are not visa-free. There is no official e-Visa portal. India has diplomatic relations with the DPRK (since 10 December 1973) and an Embassy in Pyongyang. MEA’s named travel-advisory list we checked does not include the DPRK — that is not a travel ban. Reconfirm https://www.mea.gov.in/travel-advisories before you tell a client India has forbidden the trip.

Tourism is not independent. The National Tourism Administration (NTA) site presents tours through state travel companies, starting with Korea International Travel Company (KITC), which receives tourists from around the world. The operator lodges the visa with DPRK authorities. Do not send a walk-in tourist file to a random Delhi agent with a made-up fee.

NTA and MFA pages we opened do not print a tourist fee, stay, or processing clock. Quote only what the authorised operator and the mission confirm that day.

Documents Required

Official NTA / KITC pages — no tourist checklist in English on the pages we checked.

  • Ordinary Indian passport (same passport they will travel on)
  • Whatever the authorised operator asks so they can lodge the file in Pyongyang

Do not copy third-party lists (photos, China visa, paper visa card). Those are operator practice, not an NTA table. Transit country (usually China or Russia on the MEA route note) has its own visa rules — check that country’s official pages.

2. Good to Know

Rules and notes that apply to every visa type

How to apply

  1. Book only with a company the NTA actually lists (KITC and the other agencies on http://www.tourismdprk.gov.kp).
  2. The operator lodges the visa. There is no self-service form on mfa.gov.kp that we could use.
  3. MEA (2021 country note): no direct India–DPRK flight. Named routes: Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, or Vladivostok. That 2021 PDF also said Covid had stopped flights and trains — treat that line as stale unless the Embassy of India in Pyongyang confirms it.

Who can apply

  • Indian ordinary-passport holders: visa required. Not visa-free, not visa on arrival, no e-Visa.
  • Usual path: organised tour through an NTA-listed company (KITC and the other travel companies on tourismdprk.gov.kp).
  • Independent sightseeing is not how NTA presents tourism.
  • US ordinary passports are a separate, much stricter rule. Do not mix that into an Indian file.

Embassy

Embassy of India, Pyongyang (MEA emergency list)
Phone: +850-2-3817215 · Mobile: +850-1912504564
Email: hoc.pyongyang@mea.gov.in

The Embassy of India Pyongyang website (eoi.gov.in/pyongyang) does not load. India’s public embassy directory also has no working Pyongyang site. Use the MEA emergency contacts page for phone and email.

India and the DPRK have embassies in each other’s capitals. A public street address for the DPRK Embassy in New Delhi was not on the MEA or NTA pages we checked. Do not quote insurance-site door numbers. Confirm with MEA Protocol if they need the Delhi mission.

Watch-outs

  • No official tourist visa fee is published. Do not quote agency amounts.
  • No tourist transit type on the pages we used. Do not invent one.
  • Entry is through a third country on the MEA route list — they still need that country’s visa if that country requires one.
  • The 2021 MEA note on Covid closures is old. Ask Embassy of India, Pyongyang (phone/email on the MEA emergency list) for current air/train status.
  • US passport holders cannot use this Indian tourist path. Split the file if the group is mixed.

How to track

There is no public e-Visa tracker. Status comes from the authorised operator, KITC/NTA, or — for Indians already in difficulty — Embassy of India, Pyongyang.
