Visa requirements, fees, validity and documents for travel to Canada.

1. Visa Types

Open a type to see processing time, stay, fees, and documents.

Processing time

Use the IRCC processing-times tool for visitor visas from India — times change and do not include the wait to give biometrics. After you pay biometrics: wait for the biometric instruction letter (BIL), then book a VAC appointment as soon as possible. You have 30 days from the date on the BIL to give biometrics.

Stay period

Most visitors may stay up to 6 months. A border services officer decides the length on arrival and may stamp a leave-by date or issue a visitor record. No stamp: usually 6 months from entry, or until passport or biometrics expire — whichever comes first. To stay longer: apply for a visitor record before status ends.

Validity

Single or multiple entry, as the visa officer decides. Generally up to 10 years, or until passport or biometrics expire — whichever comes first. An officer may set a shorter validity.

About This Visa

Indian ordinary-passport holders need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to visit or transit through Canada. India is on IRCC’s visa-required list. India is not on the expanded eTA list for select visa-required countries — so a prior Canadian visa or a US nonimmigrant visa does not switch an Indian passport to an eTA path. Usual staff path: apply online in the IRCC Portal, pay the visitor-visa and biometrics fees, then give fingerprints and a photo at a Canada Visa Application Centre in India after the BIL.

Tourism, family visits and other temporary visits are covered when the officer is satisfied they will leave Canada. No paid work on a visitor visa.

Documents Required

Visitor visa

  • Valid passport or travel document (digital copy for the online file). Renew first if needed — IRCC asks for validity of at least 6 months from the planned travel date
  • Clear colour copy of the passport / travel document you will use to travel
  • Proof of funds for the stay (amount depends on length of stay and hotel vs family/friends)
  • Proof of ties to India (job, home, assets, family) showing they will leave Canada
  • Purpose of trip papers as the personalized IRCC checklist asks (itinerary, invitation if visiting someone, etc.)
  • Letter of invitation and/or medical exam only if IRCC or the visa office asks
  • Biometrics after the BIL at a VAC (unless exempt)

Follow the personalized document checklist in the IRCC Portal for applications from India. Extra local visa-office papers may apply.

Processing time

No Canadian visitor visa and no eTA for this path when the US permanent-resident exemption applies. CBSA still decides entry at the border.

Stay period

Temporary stay as a visitor — normally up to 6 months unless the officer sets another period.

Validity

Travel with a valid passport of nationality plus valid US permanent-resident proof (e.g. green card).

Visa Fees and Charges

No Canadian visitor-visa fee and no eTA fee when this US PR exemption applies

About This Visa

Indian citizens who are lawful permanent residents of the United States do not need a Canadian visitor visa or an eTA when they travel under IRCC’s US permanent-resident rules. They must carry a valid passport from their country of nationality and valid proof of US permanent residence (for example Form I-551 green card, or another document IRCC accepts as equivalent).

This is not the same as holding only a US nonimmigrant visa. Indian passport holders with a US tourist visa still need a Canadian TRV unless another IRCC rule clearly applies — India is not on the eTA-X country list.

Documents Required

US lawful permanent residents

  • Valid passport of nationality (Indian passport for this client path)
  • Valid US permanent resident card (Form I-551) or other proof of status IRCC accepts (temporary I-551 stamp, certain I-797 combinations, re-entry permit, etc.)

2. Good to Know

Rules and notes that apply to every visa type

How to apply

  1. Confirm they need a TRV (usual for Indian passports) or qualify as a US permanent resident.
  2. Create / sign in to the IRCC Portal. Start a visitor visa. Answer the questions and follow the personalized checklist.
  3. Pay visitor-visa fee (CAD 100 per person, or family maximum CAD 500) plus biometrics (CAD 85 / family max CAD 170) by credit or debit unless exempt.
  4. Submit online. Wait for the biometric instruction letter, then book a free biometrics appointment at an India VAC (Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune).
  5. Give fingerprints and photo within 30 days of the BIL date. IRCC processing continues after biometrics. Track in the account; use the IRCC web form for status questions.

Who can apply

  • Indian ordinary-passport holders: visitor visa (TRV) online, then biometrics at an India VAC.
  • US green-card holders (including Indian nationals): passport + US PR proof — no Canadian visa/eTA under the April 2022 rule.
  • Study or work: study permit or work permit paths — not this tourist TRV alone.
  • Super visa (parents/grandparents) is a separate visitor product with its own IRCC rules; the per-person visitor fee is still CAD 100.
